The french bagpipes

Cabrette

The French bagpipes are numerous and very different from each other.

They range from the rustic "Cabrette of Boha" (instrument with a double reed, simple like the Eastern European bagpipe) to the big "Bourbonnaise", from the small Breton "Biniou koz" to the refined "Musette of the Court" (built deliberately for the baroque music).

In no other country of the world the bagpipe has reached such a great evolution as it has in France.

Unlike the more widespread bagpipes such as the Scottish one or the Gaita, the majority of the French bagpipes have got an extension of an octave and a half and can perform almost the entire chromatic scale, and therefore, there is the possibility to play in minor as well.
